The first trailer for Hobbs & Shaw, the spin-off of the Fast & Furious franchise starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, is finally here. The latest entry in the long-running series gets a bit of a buddy cop-style makeover this time around, with all the hi-jinks and macho posturing that entails. Johnson and Statham reprise their roles as federal agent Luke Hobbs and mercenary Deckard Shaw, two hard-edged men forced to work together and deal with each other. Their goal – to stop the villainous Brixton Lore (Idris Elba), a criminal mastermind of a terrorist who also (surprisingly enough) is a near-indestructible cyborg.
Joining along for the ride is the Hobbs and Shaw family, including Vanessa Kirby as Shaw’s sister (also an MI6 agent), Helen Mirren returning as the Shaw family matriarch, and wrestler Roman Reigns taking a turn towards the movies with a role as Hobbs’ brother.
Hobbs & Shaw (full name: Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, gotta make sure people remember its a spinoff) drives into theaters via Universal Pictures August 2, 2019. Almost by default, this should end up being the #1 release on its opening weekend, beating out fellow August 2 openers Dora the Explorer and the perennially delayed New Mutants. August itself is pretty devoid of any major blockbusters, so Hobbs & Shaw‘s biggest competition for the international markets the Fast & Furious series typically do well in will probably be The Lion King, coming out two weeks before it.
